UIPM 2026 PENTATHLON WORLD CUP CAIRO: GUZI (HUN) AND MOHAMED (EGY) TURN COMPETITION TO DUST

Hungarian heroine takes career gold tally to three
Egyptian idol continues incredible run of success in home event
Podium joy for Malashenoka, Hureyeva (AIN), Rochat (FRA) and Koleszar (HUN)
CAIRO, EGYPT: April 12, 2026 – An epic day of Pentathlon on the hot sands of Cairo left fans breathless as Blanka Guzi of Hungary and Moutaz Mohamed of Egypt marked the dawn of a new format with stunning victories.
Both champion athletes set new-format world records in Laser Run, turning the competition to dust as they achieved impressive victories on an unforgettable Super Sunday.
Guzi (HUN) overtook 5th-placed Michelle Gulyas (HUN), the Paris 2024 Olympic champion, and 6th-placed Ilke Ozyuksel of Türkiye on her way to a 10sec margin of victory over two individual neutral athletes, Anastasiya Malashenoka and Viyaleta Hureyeva, who reversed their 2025 positions with Malashenoka (AIN) taking silver.
There was more Hungarian joy in the Men’s Final as Mihaly Koleszar (HUN) repeated last season’s bronze medal, while Mathis Rochat of France claimed silver, both keeping up the momentum of breakthrough 2025 seasons. Neither of them could do anything to stop world No.1 Mohamed (EGY) powering past them to scorch to an 11sec victory.

MEDALLIST REACTION: WOMEN
Women’s gold medallist Guzi (HUN) said: “I’m absolutely delighted. I didn't prepare myself to win this competition. The last time that I won a UIPM competition was in 2024, just before the Olympic Games. So I didn't prepare myself, but it's a good feeling, right?
“Swimming became one of my favourite disciplines in recent weeks. So yes, I really like Swimming. And it was hard work, so it means a lot. I was confident and I felt, right before the competition, that my Running and Swimming times in training were really good. So I could trust in these times.”
Silver medallist Malashenoka (AIN) said: “I’m very happy because I had super Shooting here, like last year, and the running was beautiful – and I hope the Fencing will be easier for me next time.”
“For my Running, I want to thank my coaches, and also thank all my relatives who are supporting me – I know they are watching me. Love to everyone. Thank you so much.”
Bronze medallist Hureyeva (AIN) said: “Thanks to everyone who supported me, it was a really difficult race today and a very long journey, but I’m happy to have any medal.”
MEDALLIST REACTION: MEN
Men's gold medallist Mohamed (EGY) said: “It was a couple of very tough days. I had stomach flu a couple of days ago. I was competing while having a lot of pain in my stomach, but I had an astonishing, incredible crowd who has been supporting me every minute.”
“I can't say how much I'm grateful for them. I can say how much I'm grateful for my parents, my father, my mother, my brother and sisters, I'm super grateful for you guys. Without you, I couldn't have done anything.”
“It's not my first time to get knocked out of the Round 16 [in Fencing]. Today, I fought hard to win the first match because I know I am sick. I needed some space, knowing my running would be a little bit slower. But after I got knocked out, I told myself I did it before and I did it again today.”
“I had to concentrate on myself, my strong disciplines, like Swimming – I did amazing swimming today. Also Shooting, I focused all my senses to this Shooting today. So it was hard, but it was worth it.”
Silver medallist Rochat (FRA) said: “I tried to save some energy for the Shooting range, because that's not my strength. So I tried to be really low on Running to shoot very well. And so, in the last 600 metres, I still had energy to race with Mihaly.”
“I work with mental preparation to focus on each discipline, one after another. And I think mental strength is even more important than physical strength in Pentathlon.”
Bronze medallist Koleszar (HUN) said: “I’ve been living with an elbow injury and I'm just so grateful for all the support I got with that. It's been amazing to compete here against all the best athletes from all over the world. I do really appreciate them pushing me to do my best.”
“And well, I’m on a podium. I am just so happy, with all the stress just coming off. And I'm really happy to stand with these two amazing guys on the podium, and also the extended podium, they are amazing athletes. So yeah, I'm incredibly happy.”
“I almost forgot it was the Final, and I was about to say in the third lap to Mathis, ‘OK, come on mate, let's work together and then let’s do it’. Well, we have two different styles in the end, I'm a lot shorter, so it was not really fortunate for us to work together, but he did amazing.”
“I'm really happy I was able to just focus on myself, and I did really amazing in the Shooting area. I’m so happy and really grateful for all the help I got. I do really hope that everyone watching at home is as happy as I am right now. Thanks, guys. I'm happy and grateful.”
PRESIDENT'S REACTION
UIPM President Rob Stull OLY said: “Our first UIPM Pentathlon World Cup of the 2026 season demonstrated the best of the Olympic movement and our sports community. Over the past few days, we had the highest number of nations and athletes that ever assembled for a World Cup in our long history, gathering here in Cairo, Egypt for friendly competition.
“A wonderful experience was had by all and demonstrated the success of UIPM’s strategic growth initiatives as well as the pure power of sport. I am very proud of the UIPM Family right now.”
